Global Mean Temperature Anomaly

Information

The temperature is steadily rising because of carbon dioxide release. Scientists predict that warming over 1ºC would cause catastrophic climate change. Temperature anomaly is the deviation of yearly average temperature from the 1951-1980 average

Effects

A temperature anomaly over over 1.5ºC is incredibly dangerous. It will lead to longer and hotter heat waves, more drought, leading to less crops. Mountain glaciers will melt faster, putting settlements in the valleys below at risk. Warmer waters and melting ice sheets causes sea level rise and intensifying flooding. In a loop effect, Arctic permafrost will thaw, releasing methane into the atmosphere.

Facts

Eighteen of the nineteen warmest years since 1880 occurred since 2001. 2016 is the warmest year on record, and 2015 is the warmest year without El Niño, a part of the natural climate cycle.

What the numbers mean

0.85

degrees Celsius
Global temperature anomaly is a direct indicator of a warming world. While that doesn't seem like a lot, that amount of change is huge when considering that that's the average temperature across the world.
